- . There is NO ProComm version 3.0 !!
- .
- .
- .
- . Any version 3.0 is either:
- .
- . 1. A hacked version of ProComm. There have been some reports of trojan
- . ProComm programs, so if you insist on using a version labeled 3.0 use
- . extreme caution.
- .
- . 2. A copy of a Beta version of version 2.4.2. Before version 2.4.2 was
- . released, the numbering of the next release was undecided and a Beta
- . version was distributed with the 3.0 numbering. This version contains
- . bugs that have been fixed in version 2.4.2.
- .
- . 3. Mislabeled.
-
-
- Please keep the following points in mind when posting questions:
-
- ** LOOK AROUND THIS BBS FOR THE ANSWER **
- Topics which seem to cause a lot of problems (ie. Host mode and Command
- files) will often have bulletins available which answer some of the most
- common questions. The message base should also be consulted for answers
- given to similar problems (this will be more useful as the message base
- grows).
-
- ** INCLUDE AS MUCH BACKGROUND INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE **
- It is better to include irrelevant information than to leave it out and
- be asked for it later. Of course, such things as model of computer and
- modem should always be included. Items which may not seem relevant,
- such as operating system, memory-resident programs, and device drivers
- (Config.sys in general) are often the key to a problem; include this
- information as well. Finally, information about your modem congiguration
- (such as: DIP switch settings, S-register settings, and pin connections)
- are often useful.
-
- ** DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM IN DETAIL **
- Under what circumstances does the problem occur?
- Does it happen every time or without apparent regularity?
- What are the exact steps which bring it about?
- Descriptions such as "My computer locks up whenever I use ProComm." are
- impossible to respond to, and will be referred to this bulletin.
-
-
-
- TIPS FOR HOST MODE OPERATION
-
- MODEM SETUP
-
- The host mode depends quite a bit on the correct installation of your modem.
- As there are a ton of modems out there, not all of which we are familiar with,
- you may have to do a bit a reading in your modem manual.
-
- First off, carrier detect on your modem MUST be set to follow the true state of
- carrier. Carrier detect MUST NOT be forced true, or high, by dip switch
- settings. Carrier detect also should NOT be set to follow DTR. It should be
- set to follow the real state, or the RS-232 conventions or however your manual
- says it. On a Hayes modem this means switch 6 in the UP position.
-
- Next, data terminal ready (DTR) should also follow the true state. It should
- NOT be forced high. On a Hayes modem, this means switch 1 is UP.
-
- Now, your cable might also have an impact on correct operation. Be sure that
- the carrier detect (CD) and data terminal ready (DTR) leads are present and in
- the correct configuration. Your modem manual should have an explanation of
- proper cable configurations.
-
- CONFIG.SYS SETUP
-
- I know many of you have no idea what the CONFIG.SYS file is. Well, its time
- for a quick lesson. The CONFIG.SYS file is a file whose contents control (to
- some extent) the configuration of your machine at boot up. See your DOS manual
- for more details. The statement in the CONFIG.SYS file that we are concerned
- with is the FILES= statement. This statement controls the default number of
- file handles available on your machine. The default is 8; for ProComm we
- recommend 20 or higher Each additional handle over 8 takes an additional 39
- bytes of RAM, a small price to pay. To set this statement, create (or edit) a
- CONFIG.SYS file in the same place as the command processor (COMMAND.COM) that
- you boot with. Include in that file a line that says:
-
- FILES=x
-
- where x is 20 or greater. This file, containing this statement, MUST be
- present when you boot. It has no effect otherwise. Upping this number can
- also alleviate other problems indicated by "CAN'T OPEN FILE" messages or the
- like.
-
- PROCOMM SETUP
-
- OK, to continue... like the manual says, you need to setup all the HOST SETUP
- options correctly for your modem. This is adequately covered in the manual and
- I won't repeat it here. The most important of those options is the AUTO ANSWER
- STRING. You can find the correct auto answer string by checking your modem
- manual.
-
- SOME ODDS AND ENDS
-
- Ok, that should take care of most peoples problems. The parts of Host Mode
- giving the most problems are the F)iles and S)hell commands. In these cases
- what are doing is basically a CTTY COMx command. This means we redirect all
- input and output to the comm port. Now, at this point DOS is in charge, not
- ProComm, and it seems to possibly have some problems. For instance, on our
- Turbo PC, if we have only one comm port installed, and are addressing it as
- COM2, all redirection (either from ProComm Host or a DOS CTTY command) went to
- COM1! Weird, or what? We have not yet determined whether this is a BIOS
- problem on that machine or a DOS problem. Anyway, a similar thing may occur on
- your machine, especially PCjrs with that weird comm port configuration. PCjr
- owners will probably need to run COMSWAP, even if this was not needed before
- for normal operations. The FILES statement comes into play here as well as new
- handles must be opened for I/O.
-
- Well, there you have it. I hope this helps you all to get Host Mode running.
- If you have done everything mentioned in this bulletin and still have problems,
- let us know. But PLEASE try all this first, as we do not have the time to
- answer these questions again over and over.
-
- Thanks, and good luck.
- .
- . In an effort to have some consistency on the message
- . board, please address messages to "SYSOP" (if you desire a
- . reply from us). Also, making messages private should be
- . avoided, since there are others who may benefit from the
- . question. For the same reason, deleting messages (though
- . sometimes desirable) is also discouraged.
- .
- . If your question gets answered, and you decide to delete
- . the answer, please delete the question also. (But it is
- . usually better to leave the question and the answer
- . "on the board" for others who may have a similar problem).
- .
- . If you find a reply from the SYSOP that contains only a
- . number, it means I am writing the reply. This is necessary
- . so that the reply thread is maintained for messages composed
- . off-line.
-
- NEXT RELEASE OF PROCOMM
- . As many of you are undoubtedly aware, the next release of ProComm
- . is close to completion. Instead of answering general "what'll be there"
- . or specific "will this be there" questions on the general message board,
- . here is a list of everything that is definite. Please understand that
- . we do appreciate the interest, we are just trying to organize this BBS
- . to give more convenient information.
- . The new message board (Wishing well) is available to make
- . suggestions for future versions of ProComm. Many of you have made some
- . excellent suggestions in the past and we would like to encourage more in
- . the future. A good reason to make your suggestion is the fact that we
- . are more likely to include features if several people ask for them. In
- . other words place your vote by leaving a message in the well.
- . Here is a partial list of what can be expected in the next release:
- . -- All protocols have been re-written to improve recovery and speed.
- . -- Ymodem-G and Imodem protocols have been added.
- . -- Many enhancements and additions to the Command language.
- . -- Terminal emulations have been optimized.
- . -- Support for high speed (9600 and 19,200 baud) modems.
- . -- Improvements to the Host mode.
- . -- All known bugs have been fixed (unix VI editor problems and stack
- . overflow with certain IF constructs in command language for example).
- . -- Improved user-friendliness.
-
- .
- . NOTICE TO USERS OF NON-HAYES COMPATIBLE MODEMS:
- .
- .
- . If you are using ProComm with a modem that does not use the
- . Hayes AT command set, we are interested in what you are using
- . for the Modem init string, modem dial command, hangup string,
- . carrier detect mask, etc.
- .
- . We will be gathering this information and will then post it
- . for all our users. Thanks for helping us out with this!

-
- That is an interesting request. You should be able to do what you want with a
- ProComm command file but you would only be able to execute it once until you
- went home and reset it (I'm assuming you are calling from a modem since you
- couldn't connect with just a telephone) You would initiate a command file that
- would start something like:
- ;---------------------------
- hangup transmit "atm0s0=1!" start: waitfor "^M" 9999 rget S1
- /* all this unless you know the baud rate */
- find S1 "CONNECT 2400" if found
- set baudrate 2400 else
- find S1 "CONNECT 1200"
- if found
- set baudrate 1200
- else
- find S1 "CONNECT"
- if found
- set baudrate 300
- else
- hangup
- pause 1
- goto start
- endif
- endif endif
- ;---------------------
- Then waitfor a password, rget the number, transmit ATDT plus the call
- forwarding initialization string, transmit the number that was entered,
- and hang-up.
- I haven't tried this so no guarantees.
- As far as a hardware device is concerned, I think you will have the 1 time
- limitation if you are using the phone companies call forwarding since nothing
- reaches your phone (I think) until the call forwarding is turned off from the
- original phone.
- If anyone knows of a device that performs call forwarding I would be
- interested in finding out.

- a command file to upload ASCII files to GEISCO. Most of the time it works
- fine. However, I have now discovered several extra characters being tacked
- onto one particular file. The extra characters are part of a previous block.
- Don't know if its the second to the last block or not. I'm able to reproduce
- this problem any time I want. I've tested this "problem" file with Crosstalk
- and had no extra stuff. Is it something I'm doing wrong or is there a real bug
- ? If a bug, do you have a fix ? FYI, the ASCII file I'm having trouble with
- is 5,605 bytes long. In testing this problem, I added several characters to
- the file and received different extra characters. Please help. Regards, Jerry

- THOSE FILES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AND RENAME THEM. THANKS IN
- ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP. HOPE THIS WASN'T TOO LENGTHY.

- I've had a similar problem with Procomm XMODEM. It appears that if a file
- length is not an exact multiple of 128, the XMODEM block length Procomm adds
- garbage to the last block. On my system XMODEM has a text switch which senses
- Control-Z as the last real character of a file and drops the rest. Try adding
- a Control-Z as the last character of your file using a text editor or the DOS
- copy command with the /A switch. Also see if the XMODEM program you are
- uploading to has a text switch.

- The garbage at the end of an Xmodem file is part of the protocol.
- Since all blocks have a fixed size, the last block is almost always
- padded with something. Some programs pad with Ctrl-Z's, some with
- nulls, and Procomm happens to use whatever is left in the buffer. In
- the next release, ProComm will pad with Ctrl-Z's too.

- Subj: TVI950 EMULATION PROBLEM
- I am using TVI 950 emulation. When inserting characters in a line, the char.
- in column 80 is retained, and the char. in column 79 is lost. This causes text
- to be garbled at right-hand edge of line. Other terminal emulation setup
- options: full duplex; no flow control;
- CR translation = CR (input and output); BS translation = non-destructive;
- BS key def = BS; line wrap = ON; scroll = ON; brk length = 350; enquiry =

- to talk to a VAX UNIX system. I am running VI text editor. However, I have
- checked out problem thoroughly with "test" programs and am convinced problem is
